When I studied at the #magyarképzőművészetiegyetem in Budapest in 2005-06, I wasn't found often at the sculpture department inside the #epreskert but at the @franciaintezet where I would read through the huge section of #bandedessinnee while having the most beautiful view over the river Danube, with its chain bridge on the right and the parliament on the left. It's where I got to know “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, her auto fictive four-part #graphicnovel in which she describes her childhood during the Iranian Revolution, her youth abroad and the return to Iran. I left Hungary just before the protests of 2006, when anti-government protesters commemorating the 1956 uprising started up a retired tank, driving it down Deák tér: pictures that made headlines worldwide.

Public spaces, and the pictures we have of it, are illustrations of power and dynamics. Ads and architecture, corporations and public policies limit and direct people’s behaviour. When it comes to your interests, free use of public space is essential, as public outrage is a necessity to question the ways corporations act. Don't buy, where you can't work. Don't shop, where you wouldn't work. Don't let anything pass: Vote with your money, vote in elections and vote with your daily actions, your talents and time.

We stand on the shoulders of giants, women, who streamed the streets before us. “Birdcalls” by Louise Lawler, an artwork where she calls out the names of various well-known male artists in the style of a parrot, is more than just a humorous nod towards these white male artists continually recognized as being at the forefront of art, its discourses, and its histories. Even though I never had to follow the example, making crazy sounds while walking down the streets at night is a self-defense technique that originated in New York in the ‘70s and that I have always kept in back of my mind: Being loud and being there.

To speed up the dry-down process of crops before its harvest, glyphosate is applied on cereals, oat, wheat, corn and potato plants, a process called desiccation. After WWII it was a fruitful way to put chemical compounds of the weapon industries to new use, destroying microbiomes ever since. Glyphosate is currently approved for use in the EU until 15 December 2022.
While Bayer, BASF and Syngeta (now Chemchina) are the largest manufacturers of pesticides, the companies in charge of the globalized food system are ADM, Bunge, Cargill, COFCO International, Glencore Agriculture Limited and LDC, that joined into an “industry-wide initiative to modernize global agriculture commodity trade operations… looking at new technologies – such as blockchain and artificial intelligence – to create digital solutions to automate grain and oilseed post-trade execution processes, reducing costs needed to move agricultural and food products around the globe.” Grow food, not lawns, but in the meantime, be aware of the globalized food system and hold the respective companies accountable!

So, let’s rethink… Housing! The first necessity of life, a roof over your head, should not be a revenue model. Care only works without profit, because accessibility is people helping people. Big pharma needs to be subjected to ethical business practices. As we need thorough investigative journalism into exploitation and modern slavery, to fight against fast fashion and the shadow economy of other global capital firms. The students repeated a teambuilding-technique over and over again to come to an own performance at the end of the week.
